The coaching carousel goes around and around while college basketball teams jockey for position as the NCAA tournament picks their No. 1 March Madness seed – yeah I know its still three months out, but I can’t help but to be excited!
College football bowl picks have been made and the games starting to get good. Here are a few words on some of the stories happening across campus this week.
The Memphis University Tigers keep on winning as they remained undefeated by taking down the No. 4 ranked Georgetown Hoyas last week and are now 10-0 and the No. 2 ranked team in the nation.
I had Memphis at the top of my NCAA bracket picks in 2005 and this season’s team is much improved over that squad from two seasons ago. Memphis has not only been winning but they are thumping the opposition by an average of 16 points per game. The Tigers are averaging 81 per game while allowing just 61. Yeah, Memphis could be the team dancing the longest come NCAA tournament picks time.
Return of the king – Keeping the college coaching carousel going was the announcement that UCSF had hired Eddie Sutton as the head coach of their men’s basketball team. Sutton is hoping to restore glory to a program that had won a couple of national championships in the 50s and Sutton is just two wins shy of hitting the 800-win mark.
I think this is a good move for all parties. Sutton gets a shot at redemption (following a alcohol-related car accident) and UCSF get a high-profile coach that brings credibility and possibly a recruiting edge. Not sayin’ they will be dancin’ this March but we could see them get some time on the NIT court.
AS THE WORLDS TURN – Rick Rodriguez’s leap from West Virginia to become the new Big Man in the Big House at Michigan left a sour taste in many of the Mountaineer’s alumni and booster’s mouths. But was Rodriguez the man for the job? Well he was the right man that was LEFT for the job.
In a perfect Michigan world, this offseason would have seen the Wolverines land one of the Blue and Maize’s own in Les Miles. However, Miles displayed one of the truly rare traits in college football coaches these days – integrity and a sense of commitment by choosing to stay with LSU.
Rodriguez will bring his spread offense to rejuvenate the post Lloyd Carr-era in Michigan. The only question remains is if he can lead the Wolverines to victory over Ohio State?
CUINLA – Rick Neuheisel has been named at the top of the Bruin’s faithful coaching wish list, and to me his hire would make perfect sense.
Neuheisel would be great fit for the head coaching job. He would breathe a new sense of offensive life into Westwood’s anemic output as he would bring his pro-style offense he has employed as the offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Neuheisel would also bring with him his NFL connections and that could give UCLA’s recruiting a shot in the arm to stay competitive with the likes of USC.
Neuheisel is a total rock star that played QB for the Bruins and would fit the image and personality they need to have in Los Angeles.
MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR – Yes the college football bowl season is heating up and the ranked teams are starting to get things done on the field.
One of the most intriguing matchups to me this bowl season is the Hawaii vs. Georgia game. Not quite the David vs. Goliath game we saw last season as Boise State took out Oklahoma, but if you are making your college football picks be sure to include this one. Can Hawaii and their pro-style run-and-shoot offense from the WAC defeat the powerhouse of Georgia?
This is not the game the Bulldogs wanted to play as anything less than a National Championship appearance is seen as an also-ran game in Athens. But the Bulldogs will be eager to make a statement against a team that some feel has no business playing in a BCS game.
