Sweet Catomine is early favorite for Santa Anita Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. Sweet Catomine isn't intimidating the competition in the Santa Anita Derby on Saturday, despite her status as last year's champion filly and her 5-for-5 record since finishing second in her first race.

Sweet Catomine, who won her first two races this year by a combined 5 1/2 lengths, was made the early 7-5 favorite Wednesday for the $750,000 race. Ten males will challenge her over 1 1-8 miles in the West Coast's major prep for next month's Kentucky Derby.

"I'm not as impressed with her 3-year-old races as I was with her 2-year-old races. I'm not so sure that she's actually taken a step forward,'' said Ron Ellis, who trains 7-2 second choice Don't Get Mad.

"She's going to have to kick it up a couple notches numbers-wise and time-wise to get involved with the colts. There isn't a standout in here and I don't think that she's scaring anybody away, that's for sure.'' Owner Marty Wygod decided to run Sweet Catomine against the boys Saturday as part of a plan to get her into the Kentucky Derby on May 7. She will be the 26th filly to try the Santa Anita Derby. Three have won the race, including Winning Colors, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby in 1988. Wygod was surprised to see 10 opponents in the field -- seven were listed at 12-1 or higher on the morning line. Each of the males will carry 122 pounds; Sweet Catomine gets a 5-pound break. " At least on paper a lot of them don't look as if they would normally be in this kind of a race,'' he said. "But I think it tells you also that they don't have that much respect for Sweet Catomine, otherwise I don't think there'd be as many in there.'' Sweet Catomine will break from the No. 2 post under Corey Nakatani, who is 3-0 on the filly trained by Julio Canani. "I'm not fazed by what other people say,'' Wygod said. "She doesn't carry the weight of last year. But she looks fantastic. ''Don't Get Mad will be next to her in the No. 3 hole, while Wilko will be on the far outside and 5-1 fourth choice Giacomo will be in the No. 1 post. Don't Get Mad is coming off a third-place finish in the San Felipe Stakes last month at Santa Anita. Giacomo was second in that race. Ellis said Don't Get Mad didn't like the hard track in the San Felipe. "He didn't show his best effort and still ran what I considered a very respectable race,'' he said. "I think he'll make a quantum leap Saturday. If I'm right about his last race then I'm expecting to win.'' Ellis had to take undefeated Declan's Moon off the Triple Crown trail because of a knee problem or that colt would have likely been the prohibitive favorite Saturday. Wilko, last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, was made the third choice at 9-2. The colt finished fourth in the San Felipe after developing a quarter crack between the toe and heel of the hoof, which trainer Craig Dollase believes was caused by the hard track. Dollase said the crack isn't as bad as a similar one Wilko had before the Hollywood Futurity in December. He finished third in that race. Dollase patched the most recent crack last week. "I'm pretty excited about his chances,'' he said. ``I'm not real happy with the post. He'll have to overcome his post.'' Frankie Dettori is flying in from Europe to ride Wilko, whom he guided to victory in the BC Juvenile. Saturday's race will be the first time both Breeders' Cup Juvenile champions (Sweet Catomine and Wilko) are in the same field. "I'm excited to be part of it,'' Dollase said. ``If they run 1-2, I'll be happy.''

Rockport Harbor back on the track for 1-mile jog

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Rockport Harbor jogged a mile at Oaklawn Park on Wednesday, four days after a baseball-sized blood clot was discovered on the right side of his neck.

"Everything went well,'' trainer John Servis said. "Rocky showed no ill effects of his latest problem. For the first time in days, he seemed like a happy horse.''

Under exercise rider Bobby Velez, Rockport Harbor was back on the track for the first time since Friday.

Servis, who also trained last year's Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, said Rockport Harbor was doing much better.

"For two or three days, we couldn't get Rocky's head off the webbing,'' Servis said. ``He was not a happy camper.

"His white cell count is down from 16,000 to 10,000, and his attitude is much better.''

Rockport Harbor, the winner of four of five starts, was considered an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

Servis said if Rockport Harbor does not suffers any more ailments, he could run in the Arkansas Derby on April 16. If he can't run that race, the plan is to run in the Lexington Stakes on April 23 at Keeneland.

Gulfstream - Race #5 - Post EASTERN: 2:44pm

#1 LOUIE NA'SSAL (ML=5/1)
#4 KUTENAI (ML=5/2)
#6 CINQUANTE CINQ (ML=6/1)

LOUIE NA'SSAL - This pony coming off a good effort in the last thirty days is a contender in my humble opinion. Stalking speed. My pals and I like this horse. That 75 fig this gelding notched in his last event tells me he's a main player this time out. PP data show this pony with three improving Equibase speed figures. Decarlo should be on a live one in this race. KUTENAI - Coa is up for another event today after riding aboard this equine for the 1st time on Mar 28th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. I really like sprinters that make a rapid turnaround. This gelding is in good form, having run a nice race on Mar 28th, finishing third. Another way to determine class is earnings per start (EPS). This horse has the highest in the group. I think he'll be close at the finish line. CINQUANTE CINQ - I expect this magnificent animal to astonish some prognosticators in today's event.

TRICKY DAY - If he goes off close to the oddsmaker's morning line of 3/1, I'll have to pass. FIREMAN BERT - Not probable for this participant to make an impact with no recent success in a sprint race. This animal hasn't shown much in the last pair of affairs. This colt recorded a speed fig in his last event which probably isn't good enough in today's race. ZAMBIZI ADVENTURE - Could be tough for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the questionable challengers list.
